FAQ’s about Lake Nakuru National Park

Have more questions? Contact us.

Can I see the "Big Five" in Lake Nakuru?
You can see four of the Big Five here: Lions, Leopards, Buffaloes, and both Black and White Rhinos. The park is actually one of the world's leading sanctuaries for rhinos, making a sighting almost certain. The only member of the Big Five not found here is the Elephant, due to the park’s fenced nature and size.
Are the flamingos still there?
Yes! While flamingo populations fluctuate based on the lake's water levels and algae supply, Lake Nakuru remains a premier birding destination. Even when the "pink carpet" is thinner, you can still see thousands of flamingos alongside massive flocks of Great White Pelicans and over 450 other bird species.
How long does it take to get there from Nairobi?
It is a very accessible destination, located about 160km (approx. 3 hours) from Nairobi by road. The drive is scenic, taking you down the spectacular Great Rift Valley escarpment. Because it is so close, it’s our top recommendation for a Day Trip or a quick 2-day weekend getaway.
What is the best way to see the park?
We recommend a 4x4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for the best photography and wildlife viewing. Beyond game drives, don't miss the hike to Baboon Cliff for a panoramic view of the entire lake, or a visit to Makalia Falls at the southern end of the park for a serene picnic spot.
